Paul Jones has taken a look at some performance statistics that Rasmus Lerdorf shared in a recent presentation from some of his tests.

It was with some interest, then, that I viewed Rasmus Lerdorf's slides on the subject of performance benchmarking. I'm beginning to think there's something unexpected or unexamined in his testing methodology.

Paul compares some of his statistics (gathered from his testing) to those of Rasmus and finds a few places where things don't quite match up - specifically in the default overhead that seems to be a part of Rasmus' stats. Paul goes on to look at EC2 as a cause to the problems but ends up without much of a confirmed answer.

On the SitePoint PHP blog, David Peterson shares some of the comments and thoughts that Rasmus Lerdorf (creator of PHP) had recently on a good range of topics (including frameworks).

This is the fist time I have heard Rasmus Lerdorf speak and it was entertaining to say the least. Refreshing would another way to describe it, I enjoy hearing real opinions and not holding back - Rasmus doesn't hold back.

He talked about frameworks (and why they're not the best thing for the job), how you can make PHP fast (or can you?) and some mention of the semantic web and Drupal.

Lukas Smith has posted the second and third parts of his talk with Rasmus Lerdorf - a look at MaxClients and HTTP headers.

Lukas also links to two resources he mentions in the second (third?) log about performance as well as mentioning one of the most useful Firefox extensions for web developers - YSlow!.

Lukas Smith got a chance to catch up with Rasmus Lerdorf (and others in #php.pecl) and "talk shop" about topics including handling large libraries and maxclients settings.

In this first post I will provide a link and some commentary on Rasmus's points regarding Doctrine (note I left independent chatter in the log in order to not have any chance of me filtering the content, but there is very little of that so I hope the discussion is still easy enough to follow).

Lukas introduces Doctrine briefly (what it does) along with some general thoughts on ORMs and making code a bit more bye code cache friendly.

Builder.au: The Web needs an overhaul

The Builder.au website has a new video posted today concerning the state of the web as related by Rasmus Lerdorf (the "father of PHP").

Rasmus Lerdorf, the father of PHP, says that the Web is inherently broken and needs an overhaul to the entire infrastructure: browsers, servers and scripting languages.

Due to the nature of the Web being created very quickly, the consequences of bad decisions early on are being seen with almost all Web sites vulnerable to cross site-scripting (XSS).

Nick Halstead's Blog: Most Influential Programmers Results

As mentioned by Nick Halstead, the results are in from the poll for the "Most Influential Programmers" list that he put together, including a PHP name in the top five.

About a month ago I posted my Top 10 most influential programmers which caused a bit of a stir. So I then followed it up with an online poll which I said I would run for a month. The time is up and the final results are in.

Coming in at fifth place is Rasmus Lerdorf of PHP fame (topped by the likes of Linus Torvads and Alan Turing). As Nick mentions, though, it was interesting to see that Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans only received a handful of votes.

Nick Halstead's Blog: Poll - Top 10 Programmers of All Time

Nick Halstead is conducting a poll of his own to try to figure out who the online community thinks are the "Top 10 Programmers of All Time".

My original list was based upon my programming background and was purely my own opinion and I did not expect everyone to agree with it. What I thought I would do this time round was to give everyone a chance to voice their opinion. [...] have pre-filled 18 programmers from my original list plus those that were suggested in the comments.

You can vote on a wide range of developers, including several PHP-associated once like Rasmus Lerdorf, Andi Gutmans and Zeev Suraski.

IBM deveoperWorks: UK PHP Conference 2007

Those that didn't get a chance to go to this year's UK PHP Conference but wanted to should definitely check out this great post by Caroline Maynard about all the goings on there.

Last week I attended the second UK PHP Conference in London. The organisers had clearly listened to the comments after the first conference, and this year's event was even better. It's the only event of its kind in the UK, and deservedly popular, with a large lecture theatre completely packed.

She talks about some of the talks that were given (including one from Cal Evans of the Zend Developer Zone and Rasmus Lerdorf giving a talk on "Fast and Rich Web Applications with PHP 5"). Check out the full post for the full story on the rest of the event.
